What's more effective, active oder passive Stereo?
There's no straight answer to that question. Sometimes passive would be the better choice, especially because it's brighter and the less expensive cardboard glasses can be used, for instance on fairs ets...
Sometimes active would be worthwhile because there's no need for a silverscreen. Projection can be visualized on a white wall.
To make decisions easier, 3Dims GmbH released the first projector which is capable of both technologies. The system is available for 4.900€ including 10 shutter glasses plus a 4 watt longrange emitter and 10 passive polfilter glasses.
With a resolution of 1024x768px (xga) and 6000 lumen, the projector provides high quality pictures even on a large scale and inconvenient light conditions.
zoom opic 1,7-2,4:1, weight approx. 10kg, comes with features and hardcase. Graphic card: Nvidia Quadro 3pol mini din jack required (optional)
Effciently alternates the polarization of light passing through it between two orthagonal orientations (of either circular or linear polarization) in sync with progressive ‘page-ip’ stereoscopic data.
In combination with a single-lens stereoscopic 3D projector and a polarization-preserving screen, this enables high-brightness, low-crosstalk (ghosting) viewing via lightweight & comfortable passive 3D eyewear.

In cooperation with the french company 'Haptation' 3Dims GmbH installed a worldwide one of a kind system:
Located at the institue of human-machine communication, the 'Welfenlab, University of Hannover' has this in it's configuration unique VR system with haptic force feedback been constructed. Not only that the user can see the objects in 3D and stereo, due to the Inka System he can also reach and move them. In case there's another virtual object in it's way, the collision will be detected and an opposing force will be triggered. Thereby close to reality studies are possible and the virtual reality is getting even more real.
9 December 2008 – Frankfurt-based high-end 3D systems integration company, 3Dims is using two F30 sx+ projectors from projectiondesign for a hi-tech 3D virtual reconstruction of the two world’s biggest rock cut buddah statues, the Buddhas of Bamiyan as part of the Gandhara – The Buddhist Art of Pakistan – Legends, Monasteries and Paradise touring exhibition taking place in Bonn and Berlin until late 2009.
Prior to being destroyed by the Taliban in March 2001, the ancient Bamiyan relics were to be found in the sandstone cliffs of the Gandhara region in Afghanistan.
3Dims has integrated two projectors with a special 6 d.o.f. rack and polarized filters for stereoscopic separation and bright display on to a 3 x 4 metre screen and the 3D reconstruction of the two dynamited Buddha sculptures of Bayminan enables them to rise from the rubble.
Using 3D glasses and a hand-held navigation device, visitors can interactively explore and experience the magnificent rock-hewn sculptures. Footage for the exhibit has been created from photos and laser technology and experts have established accurate measurement data for three-dimension representation. The 3D models and the whole scene where generated by experts from RWTH Aachen under leadership of Ing. Georgis Toubekis and the order of UNESCO.
Friedhelm Birk, Managing Director of 3Dims GmbH said this one of their most ambitious exhibition projects so far:
Ghandhara is primarily Buddhist art from the historical region of present-day Pakistan and the first anthropomorphic depictions of Buddha began to emerge in the 1st century AD. The Computer Science/Telecommunications and Architecture of the Aachen Technical University (RWTH) were involved in creating the exhibition presentation.
Gandhara – The Buddhist Art of Pakistan – Legends, Monasteries and Paradise I managed by Kunst und Austellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland GmbH and will be shown at the Art and Exhibition Hall, Bonn from November 2008 to March 2009, and at the Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin from April to August, 2009.

Fredrikstad, Norway, – As part the investment in research and development, the German pump specialist WILO AG has installed a Virtual Reality system using DLP® projectors from Norway’s projectiondesign.
Designed and installed by Frankfurt-based integrator 3Dims, the system is located at Wilo’s Advanced Research and Technology Centre (ARTEC) in Dortmund, Germany which employs 180 people. Wilo pumps and pump systems are designed for heating, air conditioning, cooling, water supply and sewage disposal for commercial buildings, municipal facilities, industry as well as in private homes and their product range is sold throughout the world.
The new ARTEC complex includes a 2,500 square metre research laboratory, where 3Dims has installed a stereo projection system around two projectiondesign F30 1080p High Definition projectors and these are both pre-fitted with EN12 lenses and Infitec™ filters.
The setup uses a Fujitsu Siemens computer workstation with Nvidia Quadro FX5600 high-speed graphics to process incoming pump and pump system data from 2D graphic data files – CAD documents, for example – and turns them into stereo images that can be viewed using 3D glasses. ART tracking cameras are also used so that the system ‘intuitively knows’ the positioning of those staff, researchers or clients viewing the images, relative to the screen. "With this innovative technology, we can evaluate the development of the pump before the product prototype has even been produced," comments Dr Frank Hendrik Wurm, ARTEC Director for Wilo AG. "This process reduces our product development costs and the time it takes to bring new innovations to our worldwide customer base."
Friedhelm Birk, Managing Director of 3Dims GmbH adds: "Following on from the excellent experience we had with projectiondesign 3D projectors when developing a CAVE environment for the University of Munich, we were delighted to specify the company’s technology for the Wilo project. The combination of the very accurate colour rendering and precision optics of the F30 1080p with the Infitec 3D filtering system is really hard to beat in these VR applications."
Anders Løkke, International Marketing & Communications Manager at projectiondesign, concludes: "The kind of 3D virtual reality system being deployed at Wilo is gaining more and more traction with our industrial end-customers, who see clear benefits in terms of reducing their time to market for new products. By using Infitec technology, our passive stereo systems need no special screen and, by offering six different lens options, we have made the F30 1080p a highly flexible 3D visualisation tool that can be used in a wide variety of applications."

A worldwide novelty, a so called 'Four Space 110', was recently installed by 3Dims GmbH at the TU Munich. A complete new project at the department of human/machine communication, where it's all about exploring new ways of interaction was developed. Therefore an immersive human/machine interface was developed: An immersive, wide-ranging, stereoscopic display - a kind of CAVE (computer aided virtual environment), has been established. Instead of the conventional 90 degree angle, an open 110 degree angle was designed. The installation has the distinction of moving a real BMW into it to use it as a drive simulator. Due to the fact that a way more open space was developed, the so-called 'field of view' has increased and there will be no claustrophobia that might arise.
Mr Ablassmeier: "We were looking for new innovative ways. With 3Dims we found a partner, who delivered appropriate proposals and concepts and also implemented them to our fullest satisfaction." The result is a solid construction of aluminum, wood, steal, acryl, mirrows and filters that fits perfect into the given room. core elemts are 8 Projectiondesign beamer, equipped with Infitec stereo-channel-seperating operation. Together they provide approximately a 12 million pixel resolution. To make sure that this high amount of interactive information will be delivered fast, 3Dims chose the many times proved, high-performance Fujitsu Siemens Celsius Worstations with nVidia graphic cards on board. The pre-installed application software was developed by IC:IDO.
The intuitive control is managed by 6 optical ART tracking cameras, which deliver the x, y and z coordinates of the head and hand position of the user to the application. 3Dims GmbH, based in Frankfurt, is one of the leading system integrators and supplier of complete systems in the VR area with a wide range of clientse.g.: sience, industry, medicine....
